The Importance of Preventive Dentistry
At Birmingham Dentistry, our goal is to help patients maintain great oral health so that they can avoid more complex dental issues and treatments down the road. We believe that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and we take the time to show our patients how to care for their smiles outside of their biannual visits. We want our patients to be able to enjoy the benefits of healthy teeth and gums while keeping things like cavities and gum disease at bay!
Teeth Cleanings, Exams & X-Rays
The American Dental Association recommends that patients starting at age one should go to the dentist for cleanings and exams twice a year. If you feel like your teeth are in great shape, checkups are still a great call. They allow us to catch any potential problems while they’re still small and thoroughly clean your teeth. Even if you brush your teeth twice a day, you may still have plaque buildup on teeth in the hard-to-reach areas of the mouth. Our hygienists make sure that each and every tooth is plaque-free and squeaky clean. After your cleaning, Birmingham Dentist, Dr. Stone will look over your X-ray imaging and visually examine your teeth for any signs of decay or other dental issues.
You may recognize fluoride from the ingredients on your toothpaste or mouthwash container. It is a natural mineral that positively affects dental health. Fluoride is also in drinking water and is a necessary mineral for keeping our teeth healthy and strong. Over time, tooth enamel (the outer protective layer of the tooth) can demineralize and weaken. Fluoride can actually remineralize and strengthen tooth enamel and help prevent cavities. Our fluoride treatments are often applied using a fun-flavored foam in a tray or brushed on like a varnish. Either way, the treatment is quick and simple and gives lasting protection!
You may notice that you have grooves and crevices on the chewing surface of your molars. This is completely normal! However, if bacteria and food debris collect in these areas, it can potentially lead to cavities and tooth decay. At your checkup, we’ll examine your teeth for any large grooves on your teeth. If we find any, we’ll use a fast-drying, long-lasting dental sealant to completely cover it and prevent buildup. Dental sealants are clear, plastic coatings that we can quickly brush over an area and they dry almost instantly. They’re a quick way to add another layer of protection on your teeth.
Oral Cancer Screenings
An oral cancer screening is a visual examination that our Birmingham dentist, Dr. Stone performs usually during your biannual dental checkups. Birmingham dentist, Dr. Stone will take a look at your cheeks, throat, neck, and face to see if he spots any abnormalities. The goal is to identify oral cancer early on, which leads to better chances of a cure. If you have any questions about oral cancer screenings, please contact our office and we’d be happy to speak with you!
