Discover how Dr. Stone and our Birmingham team can help ensure a lifetime of exceptional oral health.
Dental Hygiene
It’s necessary to practice good oral hygiene habits to maintain healthy teeth and gums. This means brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing regularly, according to the American Dental Association (ADA).
Scheduling biannual dental check-ups and professional cleanings is just as important as maintaining good oral hygiene at home. This allows us to eliminate debris from hard-to-reach places between your teeth and help prevent additional oral health problems, like tooth decay and gum disease.
Teeth Cleanings, Exams & X-Rays
During your regular dental check-up, our hygienists will provide you with a thorough teeth cleaning, ensuring that each tooth is plaque-free and feeling fresh.
After your cleaning, Dr. Stone will review your X-ray imaging and examine your teeth for signs of cavities, gum disease, decay, and other dental issues. Our X-rays are quick, easy, and require less radiation for greater efficiency than ever before.
Root Canal Therapy
The root canal is the deepest layer of your tooth that holds nerves and blood vessels, known as the pulp. If a cavity, cracked, or broken tooth is left untreated, the pulp can quickly become infected and cause severe pain, inflammation, tooth sensitivity, and more.
Fortunately, Dr. Stone can help relieve your pain and save your natural tooth with root canal therapy. We’ll create a small opening to remove the infected tissue and cap it with a natural-looking porcelain crown. This will protect and strengthen the health, function, and appearance of your natural tooth.
Frequently Asked Questions About General Dentistry & Oral Hygiene
We require patients to update their X-rays once a year to assess your oral health and whether there are signs of gum or bone infections. It’s important to take X-rays each year to minimize risk of excessive loss of tooth structure and bone loss, as well as prevent the need for root canal treatment.
An oral cancer screening is performed during each routine dental visit to Premier Birmingham Dentistry. Screenings are a critical precautionary measure taken to identify any progressive signs of early cancer. This allows our dentists to identify symptoms early on for a better survival rate.
During an oral cancer screening, we’ll examine the face, neck, lips, oral cavity, and inside of the nose. Some of the things we look for are:
- Swellings
- Patches of colors
- Bumps
- Abnormalities
- Ulcerations
- Asymmetries
In most cases, root canal therapy is completed in one to two appointments lasting about 90 minutes each. The procedure time varies depending on each patient, how many teeth require a root canal, and the condition of your oral health.
We’ll provide you with a more accurate timeline of your root canal during your initial consultation with one of our Birmingham dentists. If you think you’re in need of a root canal, give us a call at (248) 644-8520 or fill out a contact form. We’ll get back to you and schedule an appointment at your earliest convenience.
To maintain good oral hygiene, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste when brushing your teeth at least twice a day. We also recommend flossing daily and rinsing with mouthwash in between meals for healthy teeth and gums.
In addition to at-home oral care, it’s important to schedule dental check-ups and professional cleanings every six months, or twice a year. This allows our Birmingham team to help maintain those pearly whites for years to come.
