Dentures in Birmingham, MI
An Affordable Solution to Tooth Loss
Dentures are an attractive, cost-effective solution for patients with any number of missing teeth. They’re made from a durable acrylic resin to look natural and help you achieve a flawless, natural-looking smile. Receiving dentures is quick and easy, so you won’t have to worry about undergoing surgery or going through a long recovery period.
Reasons for Dentures
Depending on your needs, Dr. Stone may recommend dentures for numerous reasons including:
- Loss of all teeth in an arch
- Loss of several teeth in an arch
- Enhancing smile and facial issues
- Improving chewing, speech, and digestion
Types of Dentures
Our Birmingham dental practice features two types of dentures: full and partial dentures. During your initial consultation, we’ll thoroughly examine your oral health and mouth, discuss your individual needs, and help determine the best solution for you.
Full Dentures
Full, also referred to as complete dentures, are used to replace an entire arch of missing teeth on your upper or lower jaw, or both. In just a few weeks, Dr. Stone can transform your appearance and smile with confidence like never before.
Partial Dentures
Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain to fill the spaces created by missing teeth. These dentures prevent neighboring teeth from shifting out of place and your facial structure from sinking in, giving you a flawless appearance.
Receiving Your Dentures
Getting a set of dentures requires more than one appointment, typically over the course of several weeks and a few steps:
- The first step is taking highly accurate molds or impressions that’ll be used to create your customized new dentures.
- Depending on your individual case, several “try-in” appointments may be necessary to ensure the perfect shape, color, and fit for your restoration.
- Your last appointment will consist of Dr. Stone adjusting and placing the completed denture with utmost precision. This will provide a natural, comfortable fit.
Frequently Asked Questions
At first, Dr. Stone may recommend you wear your denture all the time. Although this may be temporarily uncomfortable, it’s the quickest way for you to adjust to your new denture and determine if any final adjustments need to be made. For the first few weeks, a new denture may feel awkward or bulky. However, your mouth will eventually become accustomed to wearing it.
Dr. Stone may want you to wear your dentures while you sleep so that your gums can adjust to your new smile. After the first few days, it’s recommended that you avoid sleeping with your dentures to give your gums a rest and to prevent pneumonia. Sleeping with dentures may cause harmful bacteria to enter the lungs which may lead to pneumonia.
For the first few weeks, it may take a little practice to pronounce certain words. Reading out loud and repeating troublesome words will help. If your dentures “click” while you’re talking, speak more slowly. You may find that your dentures occasionally slip when you laugh, cough or smile. Reposition the dentures by gently biting down and swallowing.
Denture adhesives can provide additional retention for well-fitting dentures. Denture adhesives are not the solution for old, ill-fitting dentures. A poorly fitting denture, which causes constant irritation over a long period, may contribute to the development of sores. These dentures may need to be readjusted or replaced. If your dentures begin to feel loose, or cause pronounced discomfort, call us immediately.
